Can’t get comfortable?
What you can do about it?
- If you suffer from heartburn try proppingyour upper body up a bit (using pillows or an adjustable bed).
- Wearing a sleeping bra and a maternity belt can give extra support to your breasts, belly, and back in the 3rd trimester.
- Pillows are your friends. Lying down on your left side with your knees bent and a pillow between the middle regions of your legs will ease your body. Adding other pillows under your belly and behind your back for extra comfort.
- Try an air mattress, or test different styles of mattresses – there are many!
- Experiment with sleeping on various surfaces – the couch, an adjustable bed, a reclining chair, and the bed in your spare bedroom – to determine what’s most comfortable for you.
Heartburn & Indigestion?
What you can do about it?
- Avoid food and beverages that trigger your heartburn. The usual suspects are carbonated drinks; caffeine, acidic foods like citrus fruits and juices.
- Eat small, frequent meals and chew your food slowly and thoroughly. Give yourself two or three hours to digest before going to bed or lying down.
- Sleep with extra pillows under your chest and head. Elevating your upper body will help keep your stomach acids where they belong. You could also try sleeping semi-upright in a comfy recliner. An adjustable bed would also come in handy here.
- Choose loose clothing and to sleep in.
Insomnia?
What you can do about it?
- Start winding down before bed with some sort of soothing ritual. Take a warm bath, have a cup of tea, listen to quiet music, ask your partner for a massage so forth.
- Make sure your room is a comfortable temperature for sleeping. Is it dark and quiet enough?
- If you aren’t asleep half an hour after getting into bed, get up and go into another room. Read a magazine or listen to music until you feel drowsy, and then get back in bed.
If you can’t fall asleep straight away, try not to stress too much about it, the anxiety will keep you awake even longer!
Leg cramps & Circulation?
What you can do about it?
- Avoid standing or sitting with your legs crossed for long periods of time.
- Stretch your calf muscles regularly during the day and several times before you go to bed.
- Wear comfortable shoes with plenty of support.
- Rotate your ankles and wiggle your toes when you sit, eat dinner, or watch television.
- Take a walk every day, unless your midwife or doctor has advised you not to exercise.
- Avoid getting too tired. Lie down on your left side to improve circulation to and from your legs, circulation is vastly improved when either pillows or an adjustable bed elevates limbs.
- Stay hydrated during the day by drinking water regularly.
- Â Try a warm bath before bed to relax your muscles.
Sharing a bed?
What you can do about it?
- An adjustable dual bed would allow for you and your partner to be at different heights and positions opposed to being on the same level, this could benefit you during pregnancy a great deal. So I believe this to be the strongest solution.
- Many pregnant women find it more comfortable to sleep or rest with their legs elevated to reduce swelling in there feet. At the same time, this provides a comfortable position for their lower back. Breastfeeding in bed is also more comfortable if the head and leg rests can be adjusted to prevent strain to the neck and back. An adjustable bed is perfect for this realignment of the body.
